This study aimed to classify male athletes based on their performance levels derived from running critical power (CP) using the 9/3-minute Stryd CP test, enabling customized training strategies and goal setting. Twenty-four trained athletes underwent the 9/3-minute running CP test on a certified 400-m athletics track. Hierarchical cluster analysis using Ward's method categorized athletes based on CP into distinct performance tiers. Three clusters were identified with centroids of 3.87±0.12, 4.45±0.17, and 5.14±0.29 W/kg. Five performance tiers were defined through ordinary least square linear regression based on power (W/kg): Tier 1: Fair (2.9 to 3.6 W/kg), Tier 2: Tourist (3.6 to 4.2 W/kg), Tier 3: Regional (4.2 to 4.8 W/kg), Tier 4: National (4.8 to 5.5 W/kg), Tier 5: International (5.5 to 6.1 W/kg). Low semi-partial R-squared (SpR 2) values (0.02 to 0.05) indicated minimal homogeneity loss when merging clusters. R-squared (R 2) explained 89% to 96% of CP variance, emphasizing cluster analysis effectiveness. The linear regression model demonstrated a strong fit (r 2+=+0.997) with a significant intercept (3.22 W/kg), slope (0.63 W/kg/tier), and a low standard error of estimate (0.045 W/kg). This classification offers insights into male athlete performance levels based on CP, facilitating targeted training programs for varying performance levels.

An observational, repeated measures design was used in this study to assess the validity of the Ergotex Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) against a 3D motion capture system for measuring trunk, hip, and shoulder angles in ten healthy adult males (38.8 ± 7.3 y, bodyweight 79.2 ± 115.9 kg, body height 179.1 ± 8.1 cm). There were minimal systematic differences between the devices, with the most significant discrepancy being 1.4 degrees for the 80-degree target angle, denoting Ergotex's precision in joint angle measurements. These results were statistically significant (p < 0.001), with predominantly trivial to small effect sizes, indicating high accuracy for clinical and biomechanical applications. Bland-Altman analysis showed Limits of Agreement (LoA) approximately ±2.5 degrees across all angles and positions, with overall LoA ranging from 3.6 to -2.4 degrees, reflecting Ergotex's consistent performance. Regression analysis indicated uniform variance across measurements, with minor heteroscedastic errors producing a negligible underestimation trend of around 0.5 degrees in some instances. In conclusion, the Ergotex IMU is a reliable tool for accurate joint angle measurements. It offers a practical and cost-effective alternative to more complex systems, particularly in settings where precise measurement is essential.

Highlighting the crucial role of monitoring and quantifying lumbopelvic rhythm for spinal curvature, the Ergotex IMU, a portable, lightweight, cost-effective, and energy-efficient technology, has been specifically designed for the pelvic and lumbar area. This study investigates the concurrent validity of the Ergotex device in measuring sagittal pelvic tilt angle. We utilized an observational, repeated measures design with healthy adult males (mean age: 39.3 ± 7.6 y, body mass: 82.2 ± 13.0 kg, body height: 179 ± 8 cm), comparing Ergotex with a 3D optical tracking system. Participants performed pelvic tilt movements in anterior, neutral, and posterior conditions. Statistical analysis included paired samples t-tests, Bland-Altman plots, and regression analysis. The findings show minimal systematic error (0.08° overall) and high agreement between the Ergotex and optical tracking, with most data points falling within limits of agreement of Bland-Altman plots (around ±2°). Significant differences were observed only in the anterior condition (0.35°, p < 0.05), with trivial effect sizes (ES = 0.08), indicating that these differences may not be clinically meaningful. The high Pearson's correlation coefficients across conditions underscore a robust linear relationship between devices (r > 0.9 for all conditions). Regression analysis showed a standard error of estimate (SEE) of 1.1° with small effect (standardized SEE < 0.26 for all conditions), meaning that the expected average deviation from the true value is around 1°. These findings validate the Ergotex as an effective, portable, and cost-efficient tool for assessing sagittal pelvic tilt, with practical implications in clinical and sports settings where traditional methods might be impractical or costly.

Background: Most studies evaluating the possible seasonal variation of semen quality have considered temperature as the only causal factor. Aims: To assess possible seasonality in sperm quality and associations between semen parameters and several meteorological variables (temperature, humidity, apparent temperature and atmospheric pressure) in a large cohort of andrological patients. Settings and Design: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional and correlational/descriptive study. Materials and Methods: Patients (n: 15665) were categorised into four groups (summer, winter, spring and autumn) according to the date of assistance at the fertility centre. Daily values of temperature, apparent temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure were provided by the National Weather System and were calculated as the average of the 74 days previous to semen collection (spermatogenic cycle). Statistical Analysis Used: As appropriate, the results were analysed by analysis of variance/Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-square test, t-test/Mann-Whitney, forward conditional regression model and Spearman/Pearson's correlations. Results: We detected seasonality effects on sperm count, total sperm count and total motile sperm count, with the highest values in winter and the lowest in summer. Correlation analysis showed that temperature, apparent temperature and humidity negatively correlated with semen parameters, being humidity the most powerful predictive meteorological variable. Conclusion: Sperm quality is influenced by seasons; increased environmental temperature and humidity negatively affect semen quality.

Magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) is an oncological therapy that uses magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to generate localized heat under a low-frequency alternating magnetic field (AMF). Recently, trapezoidal pulsed alternating magnetic fields (TPAMFs) have proven their efficacy in enhancing the efficiency of heating in MHT as compared to the sinusoidal one. Our study aims to compare the TPAMF waveform's killing effect against the sinusoidal waveform in B16F10 and CT2A cell lines to determine more efficient waveforms in causing cell death. For that purpose, we used MNPs and different AMF waveforms: trapezoidal (TP), almost-square (TS), triangular (TR), and sinusoidal signal (SN). MNPs at 1 and 4 mg/mL did not affect cell viability during treatment. The exposition of B16F10 and CT2A cells to only AMF showed nonsignificant mortality. Hence, the synergetic effect of the AMF and MNPs causes the observed cell death. Among the explored cases, the nonharmonic signals demonstrated better efficacy than the SN one as an MHT treatment. This study has revealed that the application of TP, TS, or TR waveforms is more efficient and has considerable capability to increase cancer cell death compared to the traditional sinusoidal treatment. Overall, we can conclude that the application of nonharmonic signals enhances MHT treatment efficiency against tumor cells.

COVID-19 is known to have deleterious effects on different systems such as the respiratory, cardiovascular, central nervous, and gastrointestinal. However, conflicting data about the possible implications for male reproductive health and fertility have been reported. In addition, the long-term consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection remain unclear. Herein, we report a case of a 42-year-old man with no known co-morbidities and normal baseline semen quality, who subsequently suffered an asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection. Shortly after, the patient developed sudden oligoasthenozoospermia, even reaching azoospermia, which gradually evolved into persistent severe oligonecrozoospermia, accompanied by semen inflammation and oxidative stress. Remarkably, the latter occurred in the absence of urogenital infections, hormonal imbalances, tissue/organ obstruction/damage, medication or drug treatment, smoking, or exposure to toxins/pollutants, radiation, or high temperature. This case constitutes valuable clinical evidence that adds to the current knowledge in the field and highlights the need for further and longer follow-up studies to better understand the putative long-term consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection on male fertility.

Running power output allows for controlling variables that have been previously overlooked by relying solely on speed, such as surface, gradient and weight. The ability to measure this external load variable now enables the analysis of concepts that have predominantly been studied in cycling, such as the Critical Power (CP), in the context of running. This study aims to predict the CP target at which trained athletes run a half-marathon and determine whether races of this distance can serve as a valid alternative to update the CP record. A group of nine trained athletes performed the 9/3-minute Stryd CP test and participated in a half-marathon race in two separate testing sessions conducted in the field. The average power during a half-marathon race is a valid alternative method for determining the CP in trained athletes, as evidenced by the agreement (95% CI: -0.11 to 0.37 W/kg) and trivial systematic bias (0.13 W/kg) between methods. The linear regression model half-marathon power = 0.97 + 0.75·CP (W/kg) showed low standard error of estimate (0.29 W/kg) and significant large association between methods (r = 0.88; p = 0.002). Coaches and athletes should be aware that the CP target for a half-marathon race is 97.3% of the CP determined by the 9/3-minute Stryd CP test.

In rehabilitating orientation and mobility (O&M) for visually impaired people (VIP), the measurement of spatio-temporal gait and postural parameters is of specific interest for rehabilitators to assess performance and improvements in independent mobility. In the current practice of rehabilitation worldwide, this assessment is carried out in people with estimates made visually. The objective of this research was to propose a simple architecture based on the use of wearable inertial sensors for quantitative estimation of distance traveled, step detection, gait velocity, step length and postural stability. These parameters were calculated using absolute orientation angles. Two different sensing architectures were tested for gait according to a selected biomechanical model. The validation tests included five different walking tasks. There were nine visually impaired volunteers in real-time acquisitions, where the volunteers walked indoor and outdoor distances at different gait velocities in their residences. The ground truth gait characteristics of the volunteers in five walking tasks and an assessment of the natural posture during the walking tasks are also presented in this article. One of the proposed methods was selected for presenting the lowest absolute error of the calculated parameters in all of the traveling experimentations: 45 walking tasks between 7 and 45 m representing a total of 1039 m walked and 2068 steps; the step length measurement was 4.6 ± 6.7 cm with a mean of 56 cm (11.59 Std) and 1.5 ± 1.6 relative error in step count, which compromised the distance traveled and gait velocity measurements, presenting an absolute error of 1.78 ± 1.80 m and 7.1 ± 7.2 cm/s, respectively. The results suggest that the proposed method and its architecture could be used as a tool for assistive technology designed for O&M training to assess gait parameters and/or navigation, and that a sensor placed in the dorsal area is sufficient to detect noticeable postural changes that compromise heading, inclinations and balancing in walking tasks.

Introduction: COVID-19 exerts deleterious effects on the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems, causing more severe disease in men than in women. However, cumulative reported data about the putative consequences on the male reproductive tract and fertility are controversial. Furthermore, the long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection are still uncertain. Methods: In this study, we prospectively evaluated levels of inflammatory cytokines and leukocytes in semen and sperm quality parameters in a cohort of 231 reproductive-aged male patients, unvaccinated, who had recovered from mild or severe COVID-19 and in 62 healthy control individuals. Sperm quality was assessed early (less than 3 months) and long (more than 3 and up to 6 months) after having COVID-19. Interestingly, and unlike most reported studies, available extensive background and baseline data on patients' sperm quality allowed performing a more accurate analysis of COVID-19 effects on sperm quality. Results: Significantly higher levels of IL-1ß, TNF and IFNγ were detected in semen from patients recently recovered from mild and/or severe COVID-19 with respect to control individuals indicating semen inflammation. Moreover, patients recovered from mild and/or severe COVID-19 showed significantly reduced semen volume, lower total sperm counts, and impaired sperm motility and viability. Interestingly, all observed alterations returned to baseline values after 3 or more months after disease recovery. Discussion: These results indicate that COVID-19 associates with semen inflammation and impaired semen quality early after disease. However, long COVID-19 seems not to include long-term detrimental consequences on male fertility potential since the observed alterations were reversible after 1-2 spermatogenesis cycles. These data constitute compelling evidence allowing a better understanding of COVID-19 associated sequelae, fundamental for semen collection in assisted reproduction.

The ability to detect small changes in a vertical jump is crucial when data are used by sports science specialists to monitor their athletes. This study aimed to analyze the intrasession reliability of the ADR jumping photocell and the reliability relative to the position of the transmitter when it is located facing the phalanges of the foot (forefoot) or the metatarsal area (midfoot). A total of 12 female volleyball players performed 240 countermovement jumps (CMJ), alternating both methods. The intersession reliability was higher for the forefoot method (ICC = 0.96; CCC = 0.95; SEM = 1.15 cm; CV = 4.11%) than for the midfoot method (ICC = 0.85; CCC = 0.81; SEM = 3.68 cm; CV = 8.75%). Similarly, the sensitivity values were better for the forefoot method (SWC = 0.32) than for the midfoot method (SWC = 1.04). Significant differences were found between the methods (13.5 cm, p < 0.05, ES = 2.1) with low agreement (rs = 0.57; ICC = 0.49; CCC = 0.15; SEM = 4.7 cm) and heteroscedasticity was observed (r2 > 0.1). In conclusion, the ADR jumping photocell is shown to be a reliable tool for measuring CMJs. However, the reliability of the instrument can be influenced depending on the placement of the device. Comparing the two methods, the midfoot placement was less reliable as indicated by higher values of SEM and systematic error, and thus its use is not recommended.

Resumen Antecedentes: Las malformaciones del tracto urinario representan el 15-20% de las anomalías por ecografía prenatal; la prevalencia oscila entre 3 y 6 por cada 1,000 nacimientos. Objetivo: Conocer el desenlace clínico de los recién nacidos diagnosticados prenatalmente con malformación del tracto urinario. Material y métodos: Observacional, analítico, ambispectivo. Recién nacidos con diagnóstico prenatal de malformación urinaria. Evaluación posnatal con pruebas diagnósticas, analizamos días de estancia hospitalaria, intervención quirúrgica y seguimiento. Resultados: 45 pacientes, 55% varones, 65% de término, 77% cesárea. El diagnóstico prenatal más frecuente fue hidronefrosis, 100% se realizó ultrasonido renal posnatal, 27% cistograma miccional, 42% gammagrama renal; 60% requirió estancia hospitalaria prolongada, 27% intervención quirúrgica, 60% seguimiento. 89% de los casos diagnosticados prenatalmente se corroboró algún tipo de malformación del tracto urinario, solo en el 75% de los casos fue el mismo diagnóstico. Conclusión: La evaluación posnatal siempre requiere la realización de un ultrasonido renal y no en todos los casos realización de cistograma miccional o gammagrama renal.


Abstract Background: Urinary tract malformations represent 15-20% of abnormalities in prenatal ultrasound; the prevalence oscillates between 3-6 per 1000 births. Objective: To know the clinical outcome of newborns diagnosed prenatally with some malformation of the urinary tract. Material and methods: Observational, analytical, ambispective. Newborns with prenatal diagnosis of malformation urinary. Postnatal evaluation diagnostic tests performed, we analyzed the days of hospital stay, surgical intervention, follow-up. Results: 45 children, 55% male, 65% term, 77% c-section. Prenatal diagnosis with higher frequency was hydronephrosis. In all cases postnatal renal ultrasound was performed, 27% voiding cystogram, 42% renal gammagram. A 60% of the cases required prolonged hospital stay, 27% required a surgical intervention, 60% were follow-up. 89% of the cases diagnosed prenatally corroborated some type of malformation of the urinary tract, only in 75% of the cases was the same diagnosis. Conclusion: Postnatal evaluation always requires the performance of a renal ultrasound and not in all cases the performance of voiding cystogram or renal gammagram.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular pathogen and the leading bacterial cause of sexually transmitted infections worldwide. Chlamydia trachomatis genovars L1-L3 are responsible for lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), an invasive sexually transmitted disease endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, South America, the Caribbean, India and South East Asia. The typical signs and symptoms of C. trachomatis LGV urogenital infections in men include herpetiform ulcers, inguinal buboes, and/or lymphadenopathies. Since 2003, endemic cases of proctitis and proctocolitis caused by C. trachomatis LGV emerged in Europe, mainly in HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM). Scarce data have been reported about unusual clinical presentations of C. trachomatis LGV urogenital infections. Herein, we report a case of a 36-year-old heterosexual, HIV-negative male declaring he did not have sex with men or trans women, who presented to the Urology and Andrology outpatient clinic of a healthcare center from Cordoba, Argentina, with intermittent testicular pain over the preceding 6 months. Doppler ultrasound indicated right epididymitis and funiculitis. Out of 17 sexually transmitted infections (STIs) investigated, a positive result was obtained only for C. trachomatis. Also, semen analysis revealed oligoasthenozoospermia, reduced sperm viability as well as increased sperm DNA fragmentation and necrosis, together with augmented reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and the presence of anti-sperm IgG autoantibodies. In this context, doxycycline 100 mg/12 h for 45 days was prescribed. A post-treatment control documented microbiological cure along with resolution of clinical signs and symptoms and improved semen quality. Strikingly, sequencing of the ompA gene revealed C. trachomatis LGV L2 as the causative uropathogen. Remarkably, the patient did not present the typical signs and symptoms of LGV. Instead, the infection associated with chronic testicular pain, semen inflammation and markedly reduced sperm quality. To our knowledge, this is the first reported evidence of chronic epididymitis due to C. trachomatis LGV L2 infection in an HIV-negative heterosexual man. These findings constitute important and valuable information for researchers and practitioners and highlight that C. trachomatis LGV-L2 should be considered as putative etiologic agent of chronic epididymitis, even in the absence of the typical LGV signs and symptoms.

Recent improvements in smartphone video technology may provide sufficient accuracy for estimation of jump height via flight time determined from video recordings of vertical-jump tests. The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of jump height estimated from videos at different frame rates. High-definition videos of 10 young adults (6 males, 4 females) performing 5 countermovement jumps were recorded at a frame rate of 1000 Hz and transcoded to frame rates of 120, 240, and 480 Hz. Flight time in the videos was assessed independently by three observers at each of the four frame rates with MyJump. Flight time and jump height were analyzed with mixed models for estimation of means and of standard deviations representing technical error of measurement (free of within-subject jump-to-jump variability) at each frame rate. The four frame rates and three observers produced practically identical estimates of mean jump height. The technical errors at 120, 240, 480 and 1000 Hz were respectively 3.4, 1.8, 1.2 and 0.8 ms for flight time, and 1.4%, 0.7%, 0.5% and 0.3% for jump height. Assessed relative to either differences in jump height between elite football players (standard deviation of ~12%) or the smallest expected test-retest variability (typical error of ~3%), the technical error was substantial at 120 Hz but negligible at 240 Hz or higher. In conclusion, use of frame rates above 240 Hz to estimate jump height with MyJump will not improve accuracy substantially.

Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis are among the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections proposed to induce urogenital inflammation and impair sperm quality. However, the topic remains controversial since contradictory findings have been reported. Herein, we performed a comprehensive analysis of U. urealyticum and M. hominis urogenital infections and their association with urogenital inflammation (i.e., leukocyte subsets and inflammatory cytokines in semen,) and sperm quality parameters in a cohort of men with couple's primary infertility undergoing initial infertility evaluation or with lower urinary tract symptoms and no infertility-related complaints. Overall, U. urealyticum and M. hominis infection was detected in 17.0% and 23.6% of patients, respectively, whereas the coinfection was detected in 3.8% of patients only. Remarkably, similar infection frequencies were found in the different patient subpopulations analyzed. Moreover, infections were associated with elevated semen levels of TNF, IL-1ß, and IL-6 and/or increased counts of total leukocytes and their subsets, including CD4 and CD8 T lymphocytes and neutrophils. In addition, M. hominis infection and the coinfection with U. urealyticum were associated with impairments in sperm quality variables. Our results indicate that U. urealyticum and M. hominis male urogenital infections induce urogenital inflammation and decrease sperm quality, thus impairing male fertility potential. Screening for U. urealyticum and M. hominis infections and performing a comprehensive analysis of different leukocyte subsets and inflammatory cytokines in semen may be clinically helpful in the diagnosis and follow-up of male urogenital infection.

Maximum oxygen consumption and maximum power output are critical measures for training prescription in endurance sports such as rowing. The objective of this investigation was twofold: to compare the physiological and mechanical responses of female and male traditional rowers during a graded exercise test and to establish reference values in this specific rowing modality that have not yet been documented, unlike in Olympic rowing. Twenty-one highly trained/national level rowers participated in the study: 11 female (age: 30.1 ± 10.6 years, height: 167.3 ± 5.0 cm, body mass: 61.9 ± 4.9 kg) and 10 males (age: 33.5 ± 6.6 years, height: 180.8 ± 6.9 cm, body mass: 74.4 ± 6.9 kg). Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in rowing performance between sexes, with a very large effect size (d = 7.2). The peak power output for the female rowers was 180.9 ± 11.4 W and 287.0 ± 17.7 W for the male rowers. The female rowers reached a VO2max of 51.2 ± 6.6 mL/kg/min at a mean of 174.5 ± 12.9 W, while the males' VO2max was 62.1 ± 4.7 mL/kg/min at a mean of 280.0 ± 20.5 W. These differences in VO2max and maximal aerobic capacity were significant (p < 0.05), with a large (d = 1.9) and very large (d = 6.2) effect size, respectively. A moderate association between VO2max, and rowing performance expressed in watts per kilogram of muscle mass was observed in the female rowers (r = 0.40, p = 0.228). For the male rowers, the correlation between VO2max and relative peak power output in watts per kilogram of body mass was strong (r = 0.68; p = 0.031). This study highlights the differences in the kinetics of ventilatory and mechanical parameters between female and male rowers and the importance of these differences for specific physical preparation in traditional rowing.

The ability to generate force in the lower body can be considered a performance factor in sports. This study aims to analyze the test-retest and between-device reliability related to the location on the body of the inertial measurement unit Vmaxpro for the estimation of vertical jump. Eleven highly trained female athletes performed 220 countermovement jumps (CMJ). Data were simultaneously captured by two Vmaxpro units located between L4 and L5 vertebrae (hip method) and on top of the tibial malleolus (ankle method). Intrasession reliability was higher for ankle (ICC = 0.96; CCC = 0.93; SEM = 1.0 cm; CV = 4.64%) than hip (ICC = 0.91; CCC = 0.92; SEM = 3.4 cm; CV = 5.13%). In addition, sensitivity was higher for ankle (SWC = 0.28) than for the hip method (SWC = 0.40). The noise of the measurement (SEM) was higher than the worthwhile change (SWC), indicating lack of ability to detect meaningful changes. The agreement between methods was moderate (rs = 0.84; ICC = 0.77; CCC = 0.25; SEM = 1.47 cm). Significant differences were detected between methods (-8.5 cm, p < 0.05, ES = 2.2). In conclusion, the location of the device affects the measurement by underestimating CMJ on ankle. Despite the acceptable consistency of the instrument, the results of the reliability analysis reveal a significant magnitude of both random and systematic error. As such, the Vmaxpro should not be considered a reliable instrument for measuring CMJ.

The synovial fluid (SF) analysis involves a series of chemical and physical studies that allow opportune diagnosing of septic, inflammatory, non-inflammatory, and other pathologies in joints. Among the variety of analyses to be performed on the synovial fluid, the study of viscosity can help distinguish between these conditions, since this property is affected in pathological cases. The problem with viscosity measurement is that it usually requires a large sample volume, or the necessary instrumentation is bulky and expensive. This study compares the viscosity of normal synovial fluid samples with samples with infectious and inflammatory pathologies and classifies them using an ANN (Artificial Neural Network). For this purpose, a low-cost, portable QCR-based sensor (10 MHz) was used to measure the viscous responses of the samples by obtaining three parameters: Δf, ΔΓ (parameters associated with the viscoelastic properties of the fluid), and viscosity calculation. These values were used to train the algorithm. Different versions of the ANN were compared, along with other models, such as SVM and random forest. Thirty-three samples of SF were analyzed. Our study suggests that the viscosity characterized by our sensor can help distinguish infectious synovial fluid, and that implementation of ANN improves the accuracy of synovial fluid classification.

Hydrogel biomaterials have found use in various biomedical applications partly due to their biocompatibility and tuneable viscoelastic properties. The ideal rheological properties of hydrogels depend highly on the application and should be considered early in the design process. Rheometry is the most common method to study the viscoelastic properties of hydrogels. However, rheometers occupy much space and are costly instruments. On the other hand, quartz crystal resonators (QCRs) are devices that can be used as low-cost, small, and accurate sensors to measure the viscoelastic properties of fluids. For this reason, we explore the capabilities of a low-cost and compact QCR sensor to sense and characterise the gelation process of hydrogels while using a low sample amount and by sensing two different crosslink reactions: covalent bonds and divalent ions. The gelation of covalently crosslinked mucin hydrogels and physically crosslinked alginate hydrogels could be monitored using the sensor, clearly distinguishing the effect of several parameters affecting the viscoelastic properties of hydrogels, including crosslinking chemistry, polymer concentrations, and crosslinker concentrations. QCR sensors offer an economical and portable alternative method to characterise changes in a hydrogel material's viscous properties to contribute to this type of material design, thus providing a novel approach.

Deep learning (DL) models are very useful for human activity recognition (HAR); these methods present better accuracy for HAR when compared to traditional, among other advantages. DL learns from unlabeled data and extracts features from raw data, as for the case of time-series acceleration. Sliding windows is a feature extraction technique. When used for preprocessing time-series data, it provides an improvement in accuracy, latency, and cost of processing. The time and cost of preprocessing can be beneficial especially if the window size is small, but how small can this window be to keep good accuracy? The objective of this research was to analyze the performance of four DL models: a simple deep neural network (DNN); a convolutional neural network (CNN); a long short-term memory network (LSTM); and a hybrid model (CNN-LSTM), when variating the sliding window size using fixed overlapped windows to identify an optimal window size for HAR. We compare the effects in two acceleration sources': wearable inertial measurement unit sensors (IMU) and motion caption systems (MOCAP). Moreover, short sliding windows of sizes 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 frames to long ones of sizes 50, 75, 100, and 200 frames were compared. The models were fed using raw acceleration data acquired in experimental conditions for three activities: walking, sit-to-stand, and squatting. Results show that the most optimal window is from 20-25 frames (0.20-0.25s) for both sources, providing an accuracy of 99,07% and F1-score of 87,08% in the (CNN-LSTM) using the wearable sensors data, and accuracy of 98,8% and F1-score of 82,80% using MOCAP data; similar accurate results were obtained with the LSTM model. There is almost no difference in accuracy in larger frames (100, 200). However, smaller windows present a decrease in the F1-score. In regard to inference time, data with a sliding window of 20 frames can be preprocessed around 4x (LSTM) and 2x (CNN-LSTM) times faster than data using 100 frames.

The crouching or prone-on-the-ground observation heights suggested by the My Jump app are not practical in some settings, so users usually hold smartphones in a standing posture. This study aimed to analyze the reliability of My Jump 2 from the standardized and standing positions. Two identical smartphones recorded 195 countermovement jump executions from 39 active adult athletes at heights 30 and 90 cm, which were randomly assessed by three experienced observers. The between-observer reliability was high for both observation heights separately (ICC~0.99; SEM~0.6 cm; CV~1.3%) with low systematic (0.1 cm) and random (±1.7 cm) errors. The within-observer reliability for the three observers comparing the standardized and standing positions was high (ICC~0.99; SEM~0.7 cm; CV~1.4%), showing errors of 0.3 ± 1.9 cm. Observer 2 was the least accurate out of the three, although reliability remained similar to the levels of agreement found in the literature. The reliability of the mean observations in each height also revealed high reliability (ICC = 0.993; SEM = 0.51 cm; CV = 1.05%, error 0.32 ± 1.4 cm). Therefore, the reliability in the standing position did not change with respect to the standardized position, so it can be regarded as an alternative method to using My Jump 2 with practical added benefits.
